Recently I discovered for the first time * that red is an amazing colour - a hue many times more exciting and appealing than blue, which I had persuaded myself 50 or more years ago, for reasons I can no longer recall, was My Favourite Colour.

* see http://tm2.co.nz/forums/view_topic.php?id=696&forum_id=1

Yesterday I made a further discovery:

Orange juice is the finest drink there is.

Better even than water (which is saying a great deal).

Better even than the riesling I have just discovered which I am very keen to tell you about before the last of it disappears from supermarket shelves.  (More details shortly; I keep forgetting the name. *)

I just thought you ought to know this.

* It's the Millton Opou Vineyard Gisborne Riesling 2006.  I bought some more bottles today.  Try it.  You'll be amazed.

I have included a photograph of the actual brand I've been drinking, just in case - like me - you've spent your entire life thinking of OJ as just another juice, and you'd like to see what I'm raving about.  It's $2.99 a litre at New World Supermarkets...

I prefer orange juce 50/50 with tonic water. My favourite citric drink however is lemon. Try this (a concentrate, to be mixed with water). (A supposedly 'secret' recipe from a friends friends friends friend - who sells this retail @ $18 a bottle!).

3 lemons, 750g sugar, 25g citric acid, 1.5 litres hot water. Using a vege peeler, finely peel the rind of 2 lemons (make sure you don't peel the pith.) Whizz peel and a few cups of the sugar in kitchen whizz until well blended and the sugar is yellow in colour. Juice lemons. Put lemon juice, sugar plus lemon sugar blend, citric acid and water in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Cool, straining if needed and pour into clean bottles. Keep in the fridge.
