Towards the end of a long and unproductive life I have noticed something for the first time:

Red is a fantastic colour.

I love it.

After a lifetime of thinking blue was my favourite colour (and in skies I feel that blue definitely has a place), I'm now getting the biggest kick of all out of bright, carmine red.

I first noticed this when I cut my hand and stared in admiration and wonder at the blood.  It was such a lovely colour.

And then this morning I was framing a photograph (not this one, as it happens: some dreary book cover) when I fell in love with red all over again.

So have some red

Let it get into your head.

Thank you for that! I was seeing black this morning. You often hear people talk of red and rage... for me this morning it was black rage. I needed that red lift! And lift it did.

I have a shade of red on one wall in my kitchen.. a designer friend was round one day and said.. no..that is  the worst colour for a kitchen.. it encourages people to eat. Personally, I think that is GOOD!.

Of course, while some of the connotations of red are very, very good ...

The red of fire can be both good and not so good. We experienced the not so good after lunch today - a grass fire in the paddock behind the house. I was walking down the back drive to get some meat out of the freezer for dinner tonight, and heard the crackle...the sound of fire is one that sends chills up the spine of any rural dweller. But, all dampened down now, and being checked regularly. Fortunately, so far, the wind is blowing away from the direction of the house, a small comfort. I'll take my camera when I next go to check.

The Finn brothers are rather fond of this colour too:

[chorus]
When my baby's walking down the street
I see red, I see red, I see red.
How could someone wicked walk around free
I see red, I see red, I see red.
I see red, I see red (red!), I see red.

I respect your wishes
You gave me such precious hours
What to do without you.
Squeezed me out of your life
Down the drain like molten toothpaste
I feel used and spat out.
Poor old me

[chorus]

I'm fed up with crying
My despair is dying,
Turning into rage, day by day
Green before you met me
In the pink when you let me love you
I was blue when you let me down
Black and Blue

[chorus]
Go!

I see red, I see red, I see red..
